Admission Policy

At the Tohoku University Graduate School of Education, we aim to provide students with a firm foundation in the field of education while teaching them how to sensitively respond to social demands and to discover and solve education related problems. Each year, we select new individuals, equipped with the necessary skills to fulfill our academic ideals and objectives, to enter our various departments. At the Graduate School of Education, we offer two different selection processes comprising of two different entrance examinations: one for standard applicants and one for applicants working fulltime.

2 Year Master’s Program (First Term Program)

Applicant Qualifications

Individuals wishing to apply for the 2 Year Master’s Program (First Term Program) standard selection process must have completed at least 16 years of school education or plan to complete their 16th year of school education by March of their year of enrollment.

Selection Process

Selection will be based upon a review of the applicant’s entrance examination score, research proposal, and transcript.

Entrance Examination
Educational Sciences Division
  • Specialized Subject Test: written answer examination; conducted individually by each research department
  • Japanese Test: Applicants are not permitted to bring any dictionaries.
  • Interview: applicants will be questioned about the contents of their research proposal etc
Design, Measurement and Assessment in Education
  • Short Essay: capacity to think logically, analyze data and express oneself etc are evaluated
  • Japanese Test: Applicants are not permitted to bring any dictionaries.
  • Interview: applicants will be questioned about the contents of their research proposal etc

3 Year Doctoral Program (Second Term Program)

Applicant Qualifications

Individuals wishing to apply for the 3 Year Doctoral Program (Second Term Program) standard selection process must have acquired a degree from Japan or a foreign country which is equivalent to a Master’s or professional degree in Japan or plan to acquire such a degree by March of their year of enrollment.

Selection Process

Selection will be based upon a review of the applicant’s entrance examination score, thesis, and transcript.

  • Japanese Test: applicants are permitted to bring one dictionary (excluding electronic dictionaries)
  • Interview: applicants will be questioned about the contents of their thesis

Research Students

Undergraduate Research Students

Individuals wishing to become Undergraduate Research Students must have completed at least 16 years of school education. Undergraduate Research Student enrollment is generally limited to one year, and students are unable to acquire a degree.

Graduate Research Students

Individuals wishing to become Graduate Research Students must have acquired a degree equivalent or superior to a Master’s degree in Japan. Graduate Research Student enrollment is generally limited to one year, and students are unable to acquire a degree.
