Curriculum

Master’s Program (First Two Years)

Currently, the Tohoku University Graduate School of Education offers one major, the "Major of Educational Science." Within this major, there are six courses: "Sciences of Lifelong Education Course," "Education Policy and Social Analysis Course," "Global Education Course," "Educational Informatics and Innovative Assessment Course," "Educational Psychology Course," and "Clinical Psychology Course."

To complete the Master’s Program at the Tohoku University Graduate School of Education, students must be enrolled for at least two years, earn 30 or more credits from courses listed in Table 1 of the Graduate School’s internal regulations according to their course classification, receive the necessary research guidance, submit a master’s thesis, and pass the thesis review and final examination. Successful candidates will be awarded a Master of Education or Master of Educational Informatics degree.

However, if a student has demonstrated outstanding research achievements and is recognized by the Graduate School Committee, the minimum enrollment period may be shortened to one year.

※Students must have been enrolled for at least one year and have earned 20 or more credits, including 8 credits from the Individual and Special Study.

Doctoral Program (Final Three Years)

The Doctoral Program (final three years) also consists of one major and six courses, similar to the Master’s Program.

To complete the Doctoral Program, students must be enrolled for at least three years, earn 9 or more credits from courses listed in Table 2 of the Graduate School’s internal regulations, receive the necessary research guidance, submit a doctoral dissertation, and pass the dissertation review and final examination. Successful candidates will be awarded a Doctor of Education or Doctor of Educational Informatics degree.

However, regarding the enrollment period, if a student has achieved outstanding research results and is recognized by the Graduate School Committee, an enrollment period of one year (or a total of three years including the period spent in the Master's Program if the student completed the Master's Program in less than two years) may be deemed sufficient.

Note: Courses such as "Information Literacy" and "Edufair Mind" (one of these must be selected as a required course in the Doctoral Program) can also be taken remotely through online (real-time/on-demand) classes from distant locations.
