Student Support System

Supporting Future Educational Leaders and Young Researchers

TA/RA System

TA (Teaching Assistant)

The TA system assists with courses in the Faculty of Education and the first two years of the doctoral program. This role is filled by outstanding graduate students who receive an hourly wage. In addition to the benefits of gaining practical experience in educational guidance, this experience serves as an excellent opportunity to blend theory with real-life experience.

RA (Research Assistant)

The RA system involves graduate students in doctoral programs participating in research projects within the graduate school, providing necessary research assistance. Qualified students, typically those in the final three years of the doctoral program, are selected for this role and receive an hourly wage. This system offers close, one-on-one guidance from faculty members, allowing students to absorb research methodologies and theoretical construction techniques. It enhances the university's research support structure while fostering the development of young researchers.

Financial Support That Enriches Your Mind and Life

Various Scholarship Programs

Scholarship Programs

Scholarships are available through the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO), including Type 1 (interest-free) and Type 2 (interest-bearing) loans. Since 2020, a new study support system has been introduced, offering need-based scholarships to undergraduate students. Additionally, there are scholarship programs funded by local governments and private organizations, providing either loans or grants. These scholarships are available to academically outstanding students who face financial difficulties, and they support students in planning a smooth and fulfilling academic life.

Tuition Waiver System

If a student is recognized as having excellent academic performance but faces significant financial difficulties, or if there are unavoidable circumstances such as sudden disasters, the tuition fee may be waived fully, by two-thirds, by half, or by one-third.

We Provide Research Grants to Foster Creative Researchers

JSPS Research Fellowship for Young Scientists

This program is designed for graduate students enrolled in doctoral programs or those who have completed such programs and possess excellent research abilities. It allows them to become "JSPS Research Fellows" and receive research grants while conducting research at universities or other research institutions. As a Special Research Fellow, you have the opportunity to dedicate yourself to your research, selecting your own research topics and environments, with the goal of nurturing creative researchers who will lead the future of academic research in Japan.

Guaranteeing an Environment for Postdoctoral Researchers Before Employment

Doctoral Researcher System

The Doctoral Researcher System ensures the status of individuals who have completed the three-year doctoral program at the Graduate School of Education or Educational Informatics Education Division. As a doctoral researcher, you are exempt from paying tuition fees, have access to university facilities and equipment, receive guidance from academic advisors, and can independently apply for various research grants as a researcher at the university.

Supporting Young Researchers in Creating New Fields

Tohoku University Division for Interdisciplinary Advanced Research and Education System

Tohoku University Division for Interdisciplinary Advanced Research and Education is a unique support organization that transcends traditional faculty boundaries to foster interdisciplinary research in new fields, aiming to train young researchers who aspire to become world-class scholars. This system offers various supports, including scholarships, publication costs, conference attendance fees, and grants for research activities, research environments, or international internships, as well as employment support for postdoctoral researchers.

While belonging to the Graduate School of Education, students can be selected as "Master student of DIARE" or "PhD course student of DIARE" to receive scholarships and research grants.

Setting a Flexible Study Period Based on Individual Circumstances

Long-term Enrollment System

The Long-Term Course System is a system that allows graduate students who are unable to concentrate on their studies due to personal circumstances, such as being engaged in work, to remain enrolled beyond the standard period of study (2 years for the first stage, 3 years for the second stage). The tuition fees remain the same as for the standard period. The aim of this system is to provide more people with the opportunity to pursue graduate education.
