No. 67 : Ms. Ui Torisawa (Tohoku University, completed AELC in January, 2025)

I attended the Summer Course held at Tohoku University in the summer of 2024 and the Winter Course held at Nanjing Normal University in the winter of 2025.

Through AEL, the following four things impressed me a lot. The first is about peers. I could make many friends from different countries, mainly from Asian countries. AEL has three pre-study sessions, and we had group discussions during them. Through the discussions, I learned about my peers' research topics and interests and deepened our discussions. During the second AEL in Nanjing, I could see the friends again, who I met in the first AEL and I could get to know them better. Also, I was really happy because my friends celebrated my birthday in Nanjing.

Secondly, I was able to have a cultural experience. I experienced traditional Japanese and Chinese culture during the AEL free day. During the AEL in Sendai in the summer, I made a cultural experience plan as a student of the host university. I organized a plan which joining a kokeshi doll (a traditional Japanese doll) and a Japanese paper painting workshop, and a yukata (a traditional Japanese summer kimono) dressing workshop. It was the first time for me to organize such a project, but I was able to review my own culture through the project. In China, I wore traditional Chinese costumes with my friends, visited temples and ate traditional food. Through these two experiences, I became aware of the similarities and differences between the cultures of neighboring Asian countries. It was a very good experience for me to review my own culture and to learn about the cultures of other Asian countries.

The third is that I was able to acquire knowledge about education. Due to my class schedule, I was not able to take classes on international educational development at Tohoku University, so AEL was a valuable opportunity for me to learn about international educational development. In AEL, the content of the A-P, K-P and S-P classes is different. I found the S-P and K-P classes difficult because they were not my specialty, but when the content was difficult, I tried to understand it by asking my peers. I tried to understand the content by asking my peers. At the end of the course, I also acquired knowledge related to educational psychology and technology, which allowed me to learn about education from multiple perspectives.

The fourth is that my English skills have improved. I was able to improve my listening skills by listening to what the teacher and peers said, and I was able to improve my speaking skills by speaking in the classes. I was also able to improve my reading skills by reading materials before and after class, and my writing skills by writing reports. It was a particularly good experience for me to learn the technical terms of education in English.

There are too many things I have gained through AEL to describe here, but I have met some of the most important people in my life through this course. I will continue to cherish the experiences I have gained through AEL, and I will continue to study hard.
