No. 70 : Mr. Xuhao Wang (Tohoku University, completed AELC in January, 2025)

When I initially enrolled in the AELC coursse, I had certain expectations about what I would learn and experience. I knew it would be an opportunity to gain new knowledge, interact with students from different backgrounds, and explore education from a broader perspective. However, it was only after fully participating in the program that I truly appreciated its depth and impact. The experience went far beyond my initial expectations and left a lasting impression on my academic and personal development.

During the summer course at Tohoku University, we had the chance to meet and collaborate with fellow students from various regions of Asia. These interactions were not only academically enriching but also led to deep and meaningful friendships. Through engaging group discussions, we were able to exchange ideas, challenge our perspectives, and build strong connections. Some of the courses were quite challenging, particularly for those of us who lacked a strong background in certain specialized areas. However, with the guidance and support of our professors, we gradually overcame these difficulties and gained valuable insights.

One of the most impactful experiences was the fieldwork component, which provided us with firsthand exposure to real-world educational practices. In particular, we observed how school in Japan, especially in Higashimatsushima City were implementing various sustainability initiatives. Seeing these efforts in action allowed me to understand the practical applications of educational theories and policies in a way that traditional classroom learning could not. It was inspiring to witness how local schools integrated sustainability into their curriculum and daily operations, reinforcing the importance of education in addressing global challenges.

In the winter session at Nanjing Normal University, I faced some personal difficulties due to health issues, which affected my ability to fully engage with the course content. Despite this, I found Professor ChenChen’s course on regression analysis to be incredibly beneficial. It not only introduced me to new analytical methods but also helped me break out of the limitations of my own research. The course encouraged me to think beyond my usual framework and explore broader methodologies that I had not previously considered. This was a crucial moment for me, as it expanded my perspective on research and provided me with valuable tools for future academic work.

Brifely ,the greatest impact of the AELC course, however, was the way it broadened my overall perspective. While I remained focused on my own research area, I also had the opportunity to explore other fields within education. Interacting with students and faculty members from diverse backgrounds allowed me to see issues from multiple angles, fostering a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of educational challenges. The discussions, collaborations, and friendships formed during this program helped shape my intellectual growth in ways I had never anticipated.

All in all, I am truly grateful for my decision to join the AELC course, even though it required me to dedicate my holidays to coursework. Without this experience, I cannot imagine whether I would have developed the same level of knowledge, perspective, and intellectual fulfillment that I have today. This program has undoubtedly been one of the most valuable and transformative academic experiences of my life.
