AELC2025 Winter Course Pre-study Session 1 : Becoming Critical Global Citizens: Building a better world starts with you and me(November 15, 2024, 16:30-18:30)

What is the definition of a global citizen and what does it mean to be a critical global citizen? On 15 November 2025, we were delighted to welcome Dr Chen-Wei Chang, Assistant Professor at National Taiwan Normal University, to share her insights on how to become a critical global citizen to build a better world.

This session was attended by 44 students from AELC member universities. In the lecture, Dr Chang introduced the definition of global citizenship to emphasize awareness of global/local development issues in society. She also explained the meaning of critical global citizen by clarifying the key characteristics and actions of critical global citizen. As the world is at a crossroads, it is necessary to consider school education as a method to develop critical global citizens among students. At the end of the lecture, Dr Chang explained six pedagogical priorities to promote critical global citizenship education.

In the second session, participants were divided into seven groups to discuss the following questions: "Are there important issues happening in your society or globally that you are paying close attention to? What is the current discussion in local/global society about these issues?" and "Could you use the 6 pedagogical priorities to discuss the above issues with your group members? Participants shared their opinions and observations on practices of global citizenship education for critical awareness through group discussions and final presentations.

This session provided us with a good opportunity to deepen our standing and strengthen our awareness of global issues. It also allowed us to reflect on our roles in exploring alternatives for educational opportunities in Asia.

The second session will be held on November 29 from 17:00 to 19:00. All interested parties are welcome to attend.
