AELC2025 Winter Course Pre-study Session 2 : School Governance in A Global Context and in Asia (November 29, 2024, 17:00-19:00)
What is the definition of school governance? How is it different from government? And How has school governance been changing ?
On 29 November 2024, we were delighted to welcome Dr. Philip Wing Chan at Monash University, to talk about school governance and share his insights on how is school governance changing in a global context and in Asia.
This session was attended by 46 students from AELC member universities. In the lecture, Dr Chan introduced the definition of school governance in a global context and in an Asian context to emphasize awareness of contextualization of educational issues in different societies. He also explained the impact of globalization on five education trends, the complexity of education systems, and main components of public school governance.
In the second session, participants were divided into six groups to discuss the following questions:
1. "Have you or your group observed this phenomenon in your country or region? old-fashioned values of wisdom, trust, empathy, compassion, grace, and honesty -> those so-called values of contracts, markets, choice, and competition
2. If you were a school principal, where would you position yourself in this picture? Why?
Participants shared their opinions and understanding of global educational changes in a global context discussions and final presentations.
This session provided us with a good opportunity to deepen our standing and strengthen our awareness of school governance in a global context. It also allowed us to reflect on our roles in exploring alternatives for educational opportunities in Asia.
The Third session will be held on December 20, 2024 from 16:30 to 18:30. All interested parties are welcome to attend.
