AELC2025 Winter Course Pre-study Session 3 : Futures of Education for a Sustainable Asia-Pacific (December 20, 2024, 16:30-18:30)

In the face of various global challenges in the post-2030 era, we must collectively rethink education and sustainability in the Asian region. More importantly, we need to rethink how to nurture human resources to further promote transformation for sustainable and resilient global development. On December 20, 2024, Dr. Jing Liu at the Graduate School of Tohoku University shared his opinion on how to build futures of education for a sustainable Asia-Pacific with 46 students from AELC member universities.

In the lecture, Dr. Liu introduced the concept of sustainability and stressed two equity issues under its meaning. Then, he reviewed the development paradigm shift and its connection to education and development. Also, he gave a comprehensive explanation of how to understand education as a goal of SDGs and education as a means of SDGs by analyzing the relations between SDG4 and other SDGs.

In the second session, participants were divided into six groups to discuss the following questions:

How does futures of education (higher education) look like for a sustainable and resilient Asia?

•        What do we need to continue

•        What do we need to stop

•        What do we need to rebuild?

The session ended with group presentations addressing the importance of diversity, alternatives, and flexibility in reforming education's future. This session provided participants with a precious opportunity to connect education to other issues related to sustainability. It also allowed us to reimagine diverse educations for a sustainable Asia-Pacific together!
