Asia Education Leader Course (AELC) Summer 2026 successfully hosted by Chulalongkorn University and Tohoku University
The AELC Summer Course 2026 (SC2026) was hosted jointly by Chulalongkorn University (CU) and Tohoku University (TU) from August 10-19, 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand. Sixty-two participants from seven partner institutions took part in the course, combining online and in-person participation. Three subjects were offered by CU and TU instructors in line with the KAS-P Curriculum (Knowledge, Attitude, Skills and Practice): (K-P) Cognitive Science of Human Communication, (A-P) Asian Comparative Education, and (S-P) Mental Health and Telepsychology.

(K-P) Cognitive Science of Human Communication, taught by Dr. Hideki KOZIMA of TU, explored human social development from a cognitive science perspective, integrating insights from brain science, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, and evolutionary psychology. The course also introduced research on the use of robots in autism therapy, helping students develop an interdisciplinary understanding of human nature.

Dr. Lenna Schlemper of TU led the S-P subject, Mental Health and Telepsychology, addressing help-seeking theories and mental health services, with a particular focus on the development and challenges of telepsychology. Through interactive activities, including discussions, role-plays, and group presentations, students developed practical skills in designing proposals to address current issues in mental health care and education.

The A-P subject was jointly taught by five instructors from CU: Dr. Chanisa Tantixalerm, Dr. Doungkamol Bangchuad, Dr. Fuangarun Preededilok, Dr. Poramet Charoynoot, and Dr. Yotsawee Saifah. The course introduced comparative education through the study of educational systems, policies, and practices in Thailand and across Asia, with a focus on inclusive and quality education, pedagogical design, and educational leadership in the age of AI. Through lectures and collaborative activities and a visit to a demonstration elementary school, students engaged with real-world educational settings and developed comparative, analytical, and reflective perspectives on educational issues across different contexts.

In addition to interdisciplinary coursework, the AELC Summer Course 2026 (SC2026) also provided students with a range of cultural exchange activities, including visits to cultural sites, opportunities to enjoy local cuisine, and a visit to a Thai traditional medicine and massage school. Through these activities, students gained a deeper understanding of local culture and interacted with students, scholars, and local communities from diverse backgrounds. These experiences fostered friendships and academic networks, encouraging students to reflect on the current state and future development of Asia from multiple perspectives.
