International Education and Development Fieldwork at Bangkok, Thailand

The fieldwork of International Education and Development Fieldwork 2023 was successfully conducted by ten undergraduate students at Yaowarat (Chinatown), Bangkok, Thailand between March 1 and 12, 2024.

With collaboration by Faculty of Education, Chulalongkorn University and Education Institute of Tsinghua University, participants were divided into two groups to conduct the fieldwork for enhancing their understanding of sustainability issues in the context of Yaowarat, Bangkok, Thailand. One group focused on Food (especially noodles) at Yaowarat. While the other group gave focus on Religion at Yaowarat.

During the fieldwork, participants took part in a training for making walking maps on the themes each group selected. With support by faculty members and students at Chulalongkorn University, they walked through the restaurants or temples to understand the places and its people. Moreover, they visualized these by drawing their walking maps. Moreover, they conducted interviews with stakeholders to enhancing their understanding of the themes and its relationship with the SDGs.

On March 8, participants took part in the final presentation sessions to share their findings.

Besides these, participants involved in this course also paid visits to Chulalongkorn University Affiliated Demonstration Schools and local high schools in Yaowarat to understand education in Thailand and the partnership and collaboration between schools and communities.

On March 11, the team visited UNESCO Bangkok Office to learn UNESCO’s initiatives for sustainable development. The launch with Japanese staff of the office allowed participants to know more about the works at UNESCO Bangkok Office and career development of these staff.

The training ended up with culture visit to the Grand Palace and other historical and cultural spots to allow participants to understand more about Thailand and its sustainability issues.

Through the fieldwork, participants learned about necessary knowledge and skills for fieldwork. It was a precious opportunity for them to learn from scholars and students at Chulalongkorn University.

Our sincere gratitude goes to Dr. Fuangarun Preededilok and her team at Chulalongkorn University for arranging this program. We look forward to more collaboration with Faculty of Education, Chulalongkorn University in the future.

The final presentation session of the fieldwork in Bangkok will be held in the end of April. Look forward to your participation!
