International Symposium on Building Edu-fare/fair Mind in Higher Education for Sustainability was warmly held at Tohoku University Graduate School of Education on March 8(Sat), 2025. The main objective of this symposium is to explore possibilities for building an Edu-fare/fair Mind through teaching and learning in higher education institutions for a more resilient and sustainable world. Moreover, it is expected to bring researchers, educators and higher education stakeholders what are the necessary transformations in teaching and learning fairness, justice, and equity to collectively achieve peace, sustainability and resilience in the post-2030.

The symposium started with an opening remark by Dr. Masahiro Yamaguchi, Vice President of Tohoku University. Dr. Yamaguchi warmly welcomed the speakers from Asia-Pacific region. Also, he shared his insight on the importance of fairness and equity in our daily life and the role of higher education for building and enhancing people’s fairness in mind.
Dr. Greg William Misiaszek, a professor of Faculty of Education, Beijing Normal University, as the keynote speaker, gave usspeech titled “Ecopedagogically Reinvesting Education: Teaching Towards Globally All-Inclusive Socio-Environmental Justice and Planetary Sustainability”. He gave a valuable talk on what role higher education should play in realizing a sustainable society. Moreover, he provided valuable insights into the importance of having a global perspective and the importance of social justice for this purpose.

Followed the keynote speech, case studies from the six universities were shared by professors from each of the following universities.
・Nanjing Normal University
・National Chengchi University
・National Taiwan Normal University
・Korea University
・Chulalongkorn University
・Tohoku University
Finally, a panel discussion was held on Building Edufare/fair Mind in Higher Education for Sustainability. Dr. Mee Young Choi, a chief of Education, UNESCO Regional Office for East Asia, moderated this session.
Through this symposium, we were not only able to gain the insights necessary to reconstruct an alternative educational vision to realize the edu-fare/fair mind, but also to strengthen our international communication among scholars and institutions in the Asia-Pacific Region.
